Throughout history, mankind has grown and developed within the schema of its collective conscious mind. This conscious development is largely the result of mankind’s propensity to categorize and define the world around them. For example, even ancient art is largely of the surroundings directly encountered by man. Just as man develops, so does art.
In the early 20th century, a blossoming movement called surrealism defied this regularity. The artists and individuals responsible for this movement sought to find a way for their unconscious thoughts to bridge the gap between reality and the imagination. They carried so much belief in this thought process that they believed it may spark real life revolution.
The images reflected in this exhibit are only a sampling of the creations sprung from the minds of well-known artists and other less known artists whose lesser recognition seems to allow their works to remain more open to interpretation. It would appear that this allows the works to achieve the style’s intentions more effectively by being less categorized. As small as this exhibit may be, hopefully undue attention is not laid upon these works as a result of its existence.
