“The Son of Man” is an oil on canvas self-portrait of the painter Rene Magritte. It serves to represent the choices to be made whenever we view one object. Magritte said, “It's something that happens constantly. Everything we see hides another thing; we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us.” These ideas speak to the core of surrealism. The world that we see does not possess all of the possibilities contained within our imagination. Even while looking at something, we will always want to see beyond. |
